We’ve recently come through Good Friday and Easter Sunday. During this time of year, I’m reminded that the disciples of Jesus must have felt like they just watched their entire perception of God (as Messiah/ Conquerer) bloodied and crucified on a Roman death tree. Now keep in mind, they didn’t know anything at the time about Resurrection. All they knew was that they had just witnessed the horrific death of their Teacher and Leader–as well as the death of their beliefs, and the death of their God-rescue dreams they had anticipated since their childhood. Their perceptions about God and about themselves were being confronted by the Reality before them … the same Reality that confronts us today.
At some point along our spiritual journey, we might start questioning some of our long-held beliefs. Sometimes, these questions might lead us down pathways that are unfamiliar to our minds and hearts. This is perfectly normal, and God LOVES our authentic questions and doubts. In fact, I’m quite sure that true growth can’t take place without them. At times, however, this process can feel frustrating, frightening, and fiercely confrontational.
Perhaps your questions are offensive to certain friends and family members who now see you as a heretic. It might feel like you’ve lost your foundation, and that all you’ve known has become uncertain. Your soul may experience an unbearable weight of loneliness… maybe even nausea or terror. It was certainly like this for me.
Take heart, dear friend. God has NOT left you to wander alone. Their Spirit is overjoyed by your journey, because She sees that it’s leading you towards the discovery of your True Self. Within the chaos lies the ultimate Beauty that your soul has been seeking. I’ve come to view this sometimes painful process as a “burning away” of ALL that is not consistent with Love – simplifying our beliefs down to the bare essentials, and then “reconstructing” our perspectives on the foundation of God’s beautiful character. And … what a true, tender, and trustworthy Guide we’ve been given for this burning away, One who comes to us as the All-Consuming Fire of Holy Love.
The journey into the Unknown is worth it, for in the darkness, God is waiting … and so is your True Self.
