The Author of Creation

This short piece from Mo Thomas, author of Into the Abyss, was one of our earliest articles, written several years before the official ER Magazine took shape. We wanted to share it again. You can also catch Mo on one of our latest podcast episodes discussing his portion of The Snow Globe (click here).

Psalm 19
1The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
      The skies display his craftsmanship.
 2Day after day they continue to speak;
      night after night they make him known.

As an engineer, trained to rely on logic, observations and analysis, it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to look at the universe and come to any conclusion other than this – there is a Creator, an Intelligent Designer Who was the First Cause for all that we see.  In this past decade, leading scientists who for years have attempted to promote a theory that eliminates the need for God are reluctantly stumbling to this same conclusion.  The more we discover and the better our models become, the clearer the message. The Voice from the heavens has become too loud to ignore.

If I read further along in the Book containing this creation account, I see that this Creator claims He wants to be known by the people that occupy His universe. He sent His Son to provide a means for man to enter into life-giving relationship with Him. And the unbiased evidence of a resurrected Jesus (strictly based on early Jewish historical data, separate from but consistent with the accounts in the Bible) force me to consider His claims seriously.

Now, I’ve discovered that the claims in scripture about the Creator are true. Not simply by insight and analysis, but by experience. It’s strange, but in this realm of spiritual matters, one cannot rely purely on logic or formula to arrive at a conclusion. Something must be experienced with the heart. From a classic children’s book titled The Little Prince, this quote applies: “It is only with the heart that one can see clearly.”

I’d suggest that there is a craving inside every man for something outside of the world that we see and live in. Relationship with God is that “something” our souls crave. There’s a reality that even the most remote, uneducated, “non-religious” tribal people recognize is True in their inner being, and it drives them to worship.

Is it possible to hear Him speaking as we see His Beauty revealed in the creation?

The next time we gaze into the night sky, may we see and hear the Beautiful God who longs to know us.
