Jesus, speaking as “Wisdom” in the book of Proverbs, said this about the creation of the world with his Father:
“I was there, close to the Creator’s side as his master artist. Daily he was filled with delight in me as I playfully rejoiced before him. I laughed and played, so happy with what he had made, while finding my delight in the children of men” (Proverbs 8:30-31 TLB).
There is so much richness to this passage. It gives us a lot of insight into what God is really like. This was before sin entered the world. This is what God is like, Father and Son, in their pure form. No sinners to yet die for. Just the Father, His one and only Son, and the Spirit; playing, laughing, and rejoicing together as they create the universe.
Imagine a Father and his Son going outside to play catch. They start throwing the ball back and forth. The Son is having so much fun. There’s nothing else he’d rather be doing. And the same goes for the Father. He’s having a blast, loving his Son. The ball goes back and forth. Back and forth. Between Father and Son. Smiling, laughing, enjoying the game. Back into the hands of the Father. And then back into the hands of the Son. Back and forth.
Oh, and let me tell you one more thing. The ball they are playing catch with is planet earth. And you are on it. Back and forth; into the loving hands of the Father and his Son. The ball is completely covered by the Spirit of the Father and the Son. Their Spirit is a spirit of love, joy, and peace. Back and forth. The ball is in good hands.
The Father and Son are having so much fun that they start adding more stuff to the game. The Father starts creating lights and trees on the ball. He starts filling it with water. The Son is going wild with glee. Every little touch the Father adds brings a wild belt of pure laughter from the Son’s heart, which erupts through his mouth. The Father adds giraffes and elephants and dogs and cats. Insane amounts of joy are flowing through the Son.
They are still throwing the ball back and forth. What a game! What a moment! One day these moments would be written down in a book called Genesis. But the words would only describe something that was far greater than what we can imagine. The Son absolutely loved and delighted in this ball called Planet Earth that his Father was crafting and they were playing with.
It was through the Spirit that the Father was wonderfully creating all these things on the ball. Butterflies and apples, flowers, and clouds. The Son couldn’t get enough of it! Again! Again! Next, the Father crafted a creature that was extra special! A being that was very similar to the Son. It was a human being! The Father made them with his own hands. These were the Son’s favorites! There was nothing he wouldn’t do for them.
This is when the game would really take off…
