Limitless Energy and the Theology of Union

The Coming Energy Shift

It would be one of the biggest breakthroughs in human history. Every nation of the world would have access to clean and limitless energy. Fossil fuels would be as relevant as the use of whale blubber to power houses. Toxic waste and nuclear meltdowns would fade from our memories. New frontiers of travel and connection would open up like never before.

Here is a wonderful little video describing what we’re talking about . . . the process of nuclear fusion . . .

Fusion energy essentially takes what happens in the center of stars and puts it into our hands. Surprisingly, this is safer and cleaner than the nuclear power all of us are used to, which happens through a process called “fission.”

In fission, atoms are split apart to create a chain reaction of explosive power. This is dangerous work that has led to countless catastrophes (as well as the development of nuclear bombs). Fission also creates a lot of toxic waste in its aftermath. On the other hand, fusion involves merging atoms together, releasing a safer and cleaner flow of energy. This is what’s happening every moment at the center of our sun.

Amazingly, scientists have demonstrated that we can take this process and do it in a laboratory. The power God has given to the children of Adam is astounding. We’re slowly discovering our ability to literally harness the power of the stars. In fact, a significant breakthrough in fusion technology occurred just last month as scientists achieved a new way of producing it in a lab. I woke up to see this news on my birthday and thought to myself how limitless energy would definitely make a great birthday present.

Now, all this being said, anyone knowledgeable on the subject will tell you we still have a very long way to go. If you watch the video, you’ll see why this is not so easy. Even though it’s theoretically possible to achieve fusion, the amount of energy (and money) needed to artificially create it is way more than the actual energy getting produced, rendering it fairly useless for now. Yet every breakthrough is a step in the right direction, and many believe we are not far from achieving an effective means of creating fusion, and thus transforming the entire face of society…

Spiritual Reflections

In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

(Revelation 1:16)

In the book of Revelation, Jesus Christ, the mature King and Head of humanity, is seen holding stars in His hand. While this is representative of something quite different than the matters I’m delving into here, there is some spiritual insight to glean from this.

Jesus the Messiah reveals humanity in our most mature form. He is our destiny. Our “omega” point, you might say. To use other language, He is the mature “grain of wheat” who died that we might all become mature grains of wheat just like him (John 12:24). This is the great longing of creation mentioned in Romans 8. Creation, Paul writes, is not longing for the return of Christ, but for the “manifestation of the sons of God!”

I believe God completely designed and planned for his children to have the ability to hold the stars in our hands . . . literally. ✨ However, this design was also meant to happen through righteous children. There is a spiritual maturity needed to handle the full blast of technological capabilities God hardwired into creation. And indeed, creation itself will not yield all its secrets to spiritual toddlers, try as they might to force their way into it.

Thankfully, because of the work of Christ and the revelation of our identity found in the mirror of His face, the human race is being invited out of the age of spiritual toddlerhood. Paul described this as being made “complete in Christ” (Col. 1:28). This is where every one of us grows into “a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ” (Eph. 4:13). This is after his statement on five-fold ministry where Paul describes the goal of all spiritual leadership. (Did you ever think the work of the apostle and prophet is to help the world be ready to handle fusion technology…?)

The Scriptures reveal that humanity was made for a little while lower than the angels; yet we are destined to rise and sit as the co-reigning Spouse of God. Our destiny is unimaginable. We are called to share in the glory of the Son of God. This includes the ability to hold the stars in our own hands . . . which will involve judging angels as well as harnessing nuclear power (see 1 Cor. 6:3).

Now the topic of judging angels is for another time. For now, we’ll focus on one other thing related to the story of fusion and God’s purposes in the world…

Fusion & Theology

So there is something to be said theologically about the difference between fusion and fission. Nuclear fission is essentially the splitting of an atom into two. Fusion is the merging of two atoms into one.

I cannot help but see how humanity’s slow process of moving from fission power to fusion power is similar to our slow move from a separation mindset to a union-centric faith.

Separation mindsets, and the legalistic systems they produce, fill the entire globe, including the world of Christendom. Such mindsets involve a deep and broken sense of distance from God and all the forms of striving to get closer to Him. As such, they lack the revelation of our true union with Christ. This not only produces a veil between us and God, but between us and the people around us as well. It creates an “us versus them” mentality where we quickly lose sight of the glory held within each person.

But a mindset based on union is all about resting in what Christ has done. It’s centered around His grace and the fruit it produces is simply the overflow of abiding in His love. It also recognizes Jesus as the High Priest of humanity (not only of Israel or the church). All are included in His death and resurrection.

Nuclear “fission,” which is all about division, leads to nuclear war, power plant meltdowns, and toxic waste. In the same way, legalism leads to a lot of toxic waste and divisiveness as well some major emotional/spiritual meltdowns (see Galatians 5 for more info). But here’s the thing. Fission contributes many good things to the world. A large portion of our planet is currently being powered by such a process. Right as you read this, nuclear power plants are splitting up atoms and providing heat and electricity to cities and nations. Nobody denies that nuclear fission benefits society. And yet, the cost is tremendous. And people have known for a long time that the sun shows us a better way…

Nuclear fusion will allow you to take a one gallon milk jug, fill it with seawater, and use that jug to power your entire house for a year (without any greenhouse gases rising into the sky). This is the capability of fusion which has already been demonstrated in human laboratories. As we’ve explained, this currently seems very difficult to achieve, but people are recognizing more and more that this is a much better way of creating power and thus it is worth the fight to make the transition into this form of energy.

In a similar manner, religion does many good things for the world. Separation-based theologies are woven into the thinking of spiritual power plants (churches and other ministries) that provide a ton of good services for the world. There are religious groups and entities who contribute in important ways to many of the needs throughout society, including the provision of food, shelter, and other resources.

And yet it comes at a great cost.

And more and more people are recognizing the Son shows us a better way.

There is a purer and cleaner message of grace that needs to transform the way we release spiritual life (true “energy”) on the earth. There is a path of union and unity that would take us far beyond our current models and systems. The life of abiding in Christ and embracing our effortless oneness with Him leaves no toxic waste. It also releases an incredible amount of power from the Holy Spirit.

And yet, this too seems so far away and very hard to attain at times. But we will get there… At Elisha’s Riddle, we believe it’s worth the fight to see the world transition into this reality. And really, we believe this union-centric faith is inevitable.

To tie this together with the last reflection, we would propose that the literal power of the stars is being protected for a generation that will embrace the power of union with the Son of God. The transition from fossil fuels to fusion is a coming parable of the sons of Adam rising from the dust of the earth (where fossil fuels are found) into the limitless and clean sunlight of the Son of God. Reaching fusion energy will also coincide with the church reaching a theology that sees ourselves “fused” with the Godhead – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – through the finished work of the Messiah.

And as the world gets hooked up into this reality, everything will change.
