Happy Trinity Meditation 1: The River of Joy

Dylan DeMarsico has written a reformational book titled “The Happy Trinity.” Within its pages there is a revelation of the infinite happiness of the Father, Son, and Spirit. God is eternally happy, with a big smile on His face, and we are His beloved children in whom He is well pleased.

We have decided to share some glorious meditations on the revelation of The Happy Trinity with you through Elisha’s Riddle. May you read these meditations with faith and child-like wonder, and may you be enticed to a life of simple joy, peace, and love.

Enjoy the bread and wine of the gospel.

We think we want a lot of different things. We want our country to be great again. We want more money. We want our spouse to stop being an idiot. But what do we want, really? We want to be happy. We want to be blessed.

To be blessed is to be happy and whole. And yes, having a healthy family, money, and a nice house, are things that God wants to bless us with. But more than all of that, and before all of that, we want to be happy. We want joy.

The New Testament, and the Good News that it carries, gives us a shortcut to joy. The apostle Paul gives us the best example of the otherworldly happiness that the gospel offers. Sitting in a prison cell, with no home, no family, and presumably very little money, Paul reminds us to “rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice” (Philippians 4:4).

For Paul, happiness was found “in the Lord.” It is in knowing Jesus’s love, the Father’s love, and the joy of the Spirit, that happiness flows like a river. And the wonderful thing about the Trinity is that God is already flowing like a mighty river of joy in the relationship of the Father, Son, and Spirit. We are just innocent bystanders who have been caught in the river like a helpless fish.

It is so refreshing to realize that you don’t have to think hard or try hard to be happy. God is happy and He knows you! Knowing God and being happy are more instinctual for a human being than breathing. A fish is born in water and begins swimming as an infant. In the same way, humans are born into the river of life that flows from the happy heart of God.

To be human, is to be a child of Joy. The whole earth is filled with the glory of God (Isaiah 6:3)! We can’t escape God’s joy. We can only pretend it’s not there. Sin is that which blinds us to the truth. Yet Jesus has come to planet earth to take all sin upon His body. We are restored!

Happiness is here and it’s free. God is holding nothing back from you. Knowing Him is the free gift of Him knowing you.

Here’s a question: Does Jesus try hard to know His Father’s joy?

No, it comes as naturally as His very existence. And the same goes for you, “As He is so also are we” (1 John 4:17).

Swim free in the river of His joy. You are free! Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, you’re free. The gospel is yours. He gave it to you. Wake up and live holy.
