God in a Bowl of Fruity Pebbles

Some find the glory of Christ in sermons and sunsets. This is wonderful, but Christ can also be seen in many other surprising places. In fact, I found Christ in one of the most amazing and treasured cereals of all time.

I’m referring to Fruity Pebbles.

Let me explain.

First of all, creation itself is colorful. Like Fruity Pebbles, the world is full of color and diversity. God Himself is diverse, existing in three Persons. His love and wisdom is multifaceted.  His voice is the sound of many waters. His Spirit is seven-fold. And of course, there’s a rainbow of many colors around His throne. Can you see how much diversity and colors there are in God and His world?

The gospel can even be found in a bowl of Fruity Pebbles: The Father gifted the Son with a bowl of creation and filled it with the fruity pebbles of all nations, tribes, and languages. We are the pebbles. All the colors of humanity are in God’s bowl. And who is the milk? Jesus. Just like His glory fills the whole earth (Isaiah 6), His glory fills the whole bowl of Fruity Pebbles. We, the Fruity Pebbles, float and live and move and have our being in Him, the milk.

And just like the colors of the Fruity Pebbles have to co-exist and float together as one in the Milk; we were created to live as one and greet all colors with a holy kiss. Not just our own kind. No, we are learning to love like our Father, who shows no partiality but is gracious and merciful to all colors. He shines the sun on the blues, reds, greens, yellows, and all the colors of Fruity Pebbles.

What cereal eater would go through each spoonful and pick out the reds? Or what child, eating Fruity Pebbles, would pick out the greens? Does not a man fully dunk his spoon into his bowl, scooping both milk and pebbles of all colors? Does such a righteous man not put his spoon in his mouth at once, munching on all colors? So too, our Father in heaven loves all colors, types, and sizes! And He munches on us in His love.

No matter what “color” you are, realize that the Father has opened His mouth and swallowed you into His love through His Son. Open your eyes to the colors all around you. This includes all of the Fruity Pebbles. It was for all colors of Pebbles that Christ bled, making peace through His cross.

At the very least, next time you have a bowl of cereal, enjoy it deeply in your soul. Reflect on His goodness and drink in the milk of His Word.
