“Here I am, and the children God has given me.”
(Hebrews 2:13)
The Father has invited us to the Eternal Birthday Party of the Son. Actually, the Father has straight up placed us in the Party of the Son without even asking. All things have been given to the Son and all things are through Him, in Him, and for Him (Colossians 1:16-17). The reality is, the whole universe is the Birthday Party from the Father to the Son.
What happens at birthday parties? We sing. So too, the Son sings praises to His Father as His Father gifts Him with us. “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises… Here am I, and the children God has given me” (Hebrews 2:12-13). And the Father and the Son both sing songs about us as they rejoice and dance at this Eternal Birthday Party (Zephaniah 3:17).
When there’s a Birthday Boy, He gets a Birthday cake. The Father has given the Son His cake, which is the dignity, honor, and value of being the Son of God. It is the reality of being perfectly loved by a perfect Father, the purity and joy and innocence of being a perfect Son.
Here’s the good news: We are at the Birthday Party of the Son. And how many of you know that the guests of the Party get to eat a piece of the Birthday Boy’s cake? It is the same with the Eternal Birthday Party. The Son, so overwhelmed by His Father’s eternal love toward Him, can’t help but share His cake with us.
The Son said to the Father, “I have given them the glory that You gave me” (John 17:22). The very same glory of being the Son of God, perfectly loved, blameless, beautiful, amazing, has been given to us! “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26). This was the Father and the Son’s intention from the beginning! Adam was created as a son of God, an image of the Father just like the Eternal Son! Luke pointed this out in his genealogy… “Adam, the son of God” (Luke 3:38).
By virtue of you being at the Son’s Birthday Party, you receive all the blessings that the Son receives. The whole world was created “in Christ.” “For in Him all things were created” (Colossians 1:16). To be “in Him” is to exist “in” everything He is as the Eternal Son of God. And so we have the absolutely ridiculous blessing of living “in” the perfect love of the Father, being an exact image and representation of the Father, being delighted and rejoiced in by the Father, being celebrated by the Father, with all the purity, blamelessness, righteousness, power, wisdom, and glory of the Eternal Son of God. We truly have been blessed with every blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3)!
Happy Birthday to the Eternal Son of God, and because we were created in Him, Happy Birthday to us too! Now we all celebrate the Son together; us, the Father, the Spirit, and all the angels. And the Father and the Spirit celebrate us as birthday boys and girls too! And the Son receives us as His favorite birthday gifts from the Father and the Spirit! What a celebration! Maybe that’s why the Bible ends with the Wedding Party of the Lamb and why the prodigal Son returned home to a wild party with music and dancing thrown by the Father (Luke 15:25).
No matter what you are feeling today, come as you are to the Birthday Party of Jesus. After Peter denied Jesus three times, Jesus still set up breakfast on the beach for him. He lovingly accepted Peter to the table to eat fish and heal Peter’s heart. The Son of God embraces even the worst of sinners and invites them in to have a piece of cake with Him.
