As the Son of God Blew Out His Candles, He Wished for You…

“I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance.
And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.’” (Psalm 2:7-8)

The Father has eternally begotten the Son. What this means is that forever and ever from before time until after time, it has always been the Son of God’s birthday. The Father says in the Psalms, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.” Jesus, the only begotten Son, is the Eternal Birthday Boy.

We know that the Son is eternal God, He never did not exist. And yet He is the eternally begotten Son of God which means He has been birthed by God the Father. Since the Father and Son are both eternal, this means that the Son has been being birthed forever by the Father and the Spirit. To put it simply, it’s always been His birthday!

When it’s a child’s birthday, a good Father will celebrate His child that day. He will give his child gifts, a birthday cake, and pour out love on him all day. This is exactly what the Father has been doing for the Son forever and ever. “This is My Son whom I love, with whom I am well-pleased” (Matthew 3:17). “This is My chosen One in whom my soul delights.” (Isaiah 42:1).

These are the eternal expressions of affection that the Father and the Spirit has for Their Eternal Birthday Boy.

And this Birthday Boy, is an exact representation and reflection of His wonderful Father (Hebrews 1:3). Therefore, His birthday celebration is well-deserved. The Father’s delight in His Son is also a delight in Himself, as He is proud of His eternal offspring and how His Son represents Him.

The Eternal Birthday Party is full of inexpressible joy and pleasures, fun, and games. The Son rejoices in the party that His Father and Spirit throw for Him. But at some point, and I’m not exactly sure when and how this came about, the Father asked the Son, “What do You want for Your Eternal birthday?” And the Son asked for you.

The Father told the Son “Ask of me” (Psalm 2:7). And so the Son asked for something amazing. He asked for the universe to exist. He asked for the whole world to be given to Him. He asked for nations filled with people of all colors and cultures. He asked for brothers and sisters who would be just like Him and love under the shade of His Father’s love. He asked for us.

And so that Eternal Birthday Gift has been unfolding for some time now. The Father gave the Son this whole world as His most precious Eternal Birthday Gift. “The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands” (John 3:35). Everything in this universe is a gift from the Father to the Son because He loves Him and celebrates Him.

In spite of our struggles and sin, the Father cleansed and made peace with the whole universe through the blood of the Son’s cross (Colossians 1:20). The Son loved and valued His Birthday Gift so much that He was willing to die for it in order to clean it up and make it right. And that’s just what He did. In case you didn’t realize, you are an Eternal Birthday Gift from the Father and the Spirit to the Eternal Birthday Boy, Jesus. And oh how He loves His gifts.

Look to Him today,

and know deeply in your heart,

that you are valued,

by the Son of God.

He loves to clean His gift,

and to make His people whole.

No matter what you’re struggling with today,

He is with you,

and treasures you,

Oh, how He loves us.
